WOW writing and blogging

WOW - there has been so much going on this week on our class blog Our WOW work and our new Kids Blog pages. Please check out the great work we have been doing during our our independent learning and science inquiry week!

What does that all mean? Well this week room 3 and room 4 have got so much to do for our science inquiry (experimenting, storyboarding and movie making) that we have been making independent learning choices during the day when the teacher is working with our science groups! We can choose between reading, writing and some maths activities as we work towards our goals. This is what is looks like:

What do you like about independent learning week room 3?

Cause and Effect - Writing Explanations

This Thursday we are going to be looking at 'cause and effect.' This can help us in our writing and reading especially in our science inquiry project. Here's a funny video to get us thinking:

Can you leave a comment and tell me what some of the 'causes' and 'effects' in the video?

Science Inquiry: Next Steps

Take a look at this 'Mad Scientist' time lapse movie from lots of NZ schools last year.
Hopefully it can inspire you to think about what you want to investigate next?

Which of our experiments grabbed your attention?

What questions or wonderings do you have?

What more do you want to find out about?

Write your ideas and questions on the Padlet below.

Kidscafe Day

Wow - what a wonderful afternoon! Check out these photos of some of the groups learning new skills and working together. Looking forward to our first Twitter chat tomorrow!

Experimenting with ice on an icy morning.

This morning, I collected some 'puddle ice' from the school car park to repeat our salty ice experiment to test our hypothesis and support our conclusions on the effect of salt on ice. Here is our experiment set up:

The final results were:

The plate with ice and salt took 30 mins 9 seconds to melt completely:

The plate with ice (no salt) took 47 mins 26 seconds to melt completely.

Check out our WOW work page over the next few days to see out explanations...

Home Learning this week: Science Experiments

Room 3 got a whiff of the fantastic experimenting our neighbours in room 4 have been doing so I thought we better have a go ourselves. This week I will be sending home the latest Home Learning Challenge:

The experiments are all 'easy to do at home' with common household ingredients so roll up those sleeves and get experimenting and investigating together!

Experiment instructions and recording sheets will go home on Monday!
